Design holds the potential to inspire hope by empowering communities to proactively imagine transformative futures, rather than merely responding to existing harms. This talk draws on a study that illustrates this idea through the use of the fictional inquiry (FI) method to reimagine social media for youth, with a focus on relationship-building. Initially, participants described a disconnect between platforms typically labeled as “social media” (like Instagram) and the spaces where they actually experienced meaningful connections (like Minecraft or Discord). Through the workshop, youth envisioned an immersive 3D platform designed to bridge that gap, onene that centers meaningful social connections, fosters presence and immersion, enables natural self-expression, mirrors physical-world social cues, and offers playful, low-stakes ways to gradually build friendships. The FI method proved powerful not just for generating creative, future-oriented ideas but also for cultivating a sense of agency and hope among youth by positioning them as designers of their own digital futures. This example underscores how design can be a source of hope—specifically through setting the right goals that lead to clear, actionable agendas.
