Title 2: "Economic evaluation to inform policy: methods, practice and challenges"
Speaker: Rita Faria, Research Fellow, Health economist at the Centre for Health Economics, University of York, UK
Abstract of the speech: Economic evaluation compares the costs and benefits of different policy options to help inform funding decisions. The UK and the University of York in particular, have been at the forefront of its development and application.
In this presentation, the speaker outlines the methods, practice and challenges of conducting economic evaluations to inform health and social care policy in the UK. The speaker uses a case study where she developed an economic evaluation for the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). She describes the key challenges where more research is required, focusing on her research interests: care for the frail elderly, informal care, perspective, measures of benefits and cross-sectoral evaluations.

Rita Faria
Rita Faria is a health economist at the Centre for Health Economics, University of York, UK. Rita has worked in economic evaluation and health technology assessment for over five years. She has conducted health economic evaluations in a range of clinical areas, for both NICE, Department of Health and other funders, and has contributed to the methodological developments in the field, namely in value of implementation. Rita has been involved in numerous technology appraisals for NICE and represented the evidence review group in many committee meetings. Furthermore, she led the recent Decision Support Unit (DSU) Technical Support Document on the use of non-randomised data for economic evaluation for NICE, and communicated the findings to audiences of various backgrounds in a DSU masterclass and in a webinar.
