Atsuko Kanehara, Research Director delivered her lecture online on AGREEMENT UNDER THE UNITED NATIONS CONVENTION ON THE LAW OF THE SEA ON THE CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE USE OF MARINE BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY OF AREAS BEYOND NATIONAL JURISDICTION (the BBNJ Agreement) for the United Nations-Nippon Foundation Fellows as well as the Hamilton Shirley Amerasinghe Fellow at the Division of Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the United Nations.

The lecture examines the historical significance of the BBNJ Agreement for the development of the law of the sea. It also succinctly touches upon how the BBNJ Agreement is moving forward after its coming into force 17 January, 2026.
